7th Graders Enhance Procedural Writing Skills with Practical Application

Written by Constance Leung – MS 7 Language Arts

In the Language Arts curriculum, our 7th grade students wrapped up their unit 'Mastering the Craft – Analyzing and Creating Effective Procedural Texts.' This unit has our students concentrating on the essentials of procedural writing, guiding them to articulate processes with precision and clarity.

Utilizing the New York Times 'How to Guides' as Mentor Texts, the students enthusiastically tackled the essential question of the unit: “How can we effectively use clear and concise language, critical analysis of sources, and detailed sequencing to transform complex information into engaging and understandable 'how-to' or procedural texts?”.  They have examined the layout and language of these guides, gaining an understanding of how to break down information into easy-to-follow steps for the reader.

Taking their learning from analysis to action, students have embraced the challenge of writing their own procedural texts. They've each chosen a subject they're passionate about and have set about constructing guides that are both informative and engaging. This hands-on approach has allowed them to directly apply the writing techniques they've been studying.

To bring the unit to life and foster a sense of community, our students have been sharing their completed work on Padlet as a digital showcase:

Through this process, our 7th graders are not just learning to write effectively; they are also gaining confidence in sharing their work and engaging with a community of readers and writers. As they continue to refine their skills, these young authors are laying the groundwork for becoming clear and effective communicators.
